Colorado Springs City Council approved Tuesday a decrease in the cost of natural gas to be effective June 1, 2010. The typical residential customer using 60 CCF will see a decrease of 5.8 percent, or about $3 per month.
The rate was also reduced in January and in April, making this is the third consecutive gas rate reduction that Colorado Springs Utilities has passed along to its customers this year. The decreases are possible due to lower than expected wholesale natural gas costs. In December 2009, the typical residential customer using 60 CCF of natural gas in a month paid about $61. After June 1, the same amount of natural gas will cost about $48, a difference of $13 per month.
