In high school track and field, would you believe that the number one sprinter in the country resides in Southern Colorado? Pine Creek's Alleandra Watt says she owes her multiple state titles to a club team in the Springs.
The results speak for themselves. There's a good chance Southern Colorado state track winners come here to practice in the offseason with the Speed Track and Field club team.
"I got a lot faster," said Canon City's Trenton Stringari. "My technique got a lot better, and I definitely wouldn't have been able to do it without this program."
"I owe all my wins mostly to my training," said Pine Creek's Alleanrda Watt. "Everyone that comes here comes because they want to be the best, and be with the best, and be coached by the best."
"The coaches here are like incredible," said Pine Creek's MacKenzie Howie. "And then you have other amazing athletes here to push you, and make you do better."
Speed Track and Field's experienced and certified coaches use intense training to supplement the high school season. It's one of the reasons Southern Colorado is coming on as a track hotbed.
"When people think of Colorado," said Watt. "They don't think of Colorado Springs, they think of just Denver maybe Fort Collins. It's kind of great to just be part of that group of athletes that have been trying to get Colorado Springs on the map, because it's a great city of athletes."
"Incredible runners do come out of Denver," said Howie. "But I think we can compete and hang with them just as well, so I would like to put us on the map a little bit better."
Colorado Springs is now known as the "City for Champions," something speed head coach Charmas Lee says he's been teaching for 24 years.
"We should take a good look in our own back yard," said Lee. "I mean, we've got some home-grown athletes and coaches here that can do an amazing job, and are doing amazing jobs. This is a grass roots program. Being a champion is year round. It's not just one track meet, or one day in school. It takes a consistent effort and daily effort to self improvement."
