Friends of the Constantinides still can't believe the news. Alex Constantinides and his family were caught in the middle of tragedy as they tried to evacuate the North Brush Creek Campground in Southeastern Wyoming early Tuesday morning.
Their VW Van was sent crashing into a raging river after the road simply washed away in torrential rains. Alex's wife Laurel and their daughters, 8 year old Hanna, 5 year old Zoey and 2 year old Lucia were all killed. Only Alex survived.
Outside their Colorado Springs home a makeshift memorial is already forming as word gets out. Alex, or "Dr. Alex" as he's known, runs a local medical practice and is also the athletic doctor at Doherty High School. "He's one that's always going out for the kids, doing things for kids." explains Doherty High School Athletic Director Chris Noll, "He has a heart for kids and volunteers his time."
Friends tell us Laurel was a social worker in Colorado Springs. She and Alex adopted their daughters from China and Korea. Friends of the family tell us they were a very close knit family who loved everyone, and were all loved in return. "It's funny to see them because Alex is this big, tall and skinny guy and Miss Laurel is this very short, petite woman." says Family firend Emily Adams who was watching the family's home while they were on vacation, "But they're beautiful together and they had such compassion and love for each other. Especially for their kids. Their girls were their lives."
Now as Alex is left to pick up the pieces, friends want him to know that he has an entire community waiting at home, ready to show him the love he and his family have always shown to them. "From Doherty High and all of District 11 for that matter, our thoughts and prayers are with him. We'll be here for him when he gets back." says Noll. "We all love him. His girls are such a blessing in everyone's lives." adds Emily, "We're here for him."
Even in the midst of tragedy, "Doctor Alex" is being hailed as a hero. As he pulled himself from the family's car he was able to save another person who had been caught in the washout as well.
