The Colorado Springs Sky Sox slugged their way past the Reno Aces 18-13 to salvage a win in the final game of their four game series in front of 3,072 fans at Security Service Field Thursday afternoon.
In a wild back and forth affair, the Sky Sox overcame an early 9-2 deficit, including a five run fourth inning by the aces, with an eight run fourth of their own to take the lead 10-9. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Chris Nelson and a two run double by Mike Jacobs to give the Sox the lead. Eight of nine Sky Sox scored a run in the inning.
Reno would take the lead with a two runs in the sixth, but the lead would be short lived as the Sky Sox would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead for good. Charlie Blackmon would tie the game at 11 with a solo shot, his third of the year, and Jordan Pacheco would follow later in the inning with a two-run double for the eventual winning runs.
Leading 13-11, the Sox would extend the lead with one run in the seventh and four in the eighth as Nelson delivered again with an RBI triple and Alfredo Amezaga capped the scoring with a two-run single to make it 18-11.
Reno would tack on two in the ninth on a two-run home run by Cody Ransom to make the final score 18-13.
Sean White (1-0, 10.29) picked up the win in relief for the Sox pitching two innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out three.
Reliever Ron Mahay took the loss for Reno allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits over two innings.
With the win the Sky Sox snap a three game losing streak and finish their first home stand of the year at 3-5. With the loss, Reno fell to 5-2 on the year.
The Sky Sox will play their first game away from Security Service Field Friday as they travel to Reno to play the Aces in game one of a four game series. RHP Billy Buckner (0-0, 4.50) will take the bump for the Sox against RHP Josh Collmenter for Reno.
