Firefighters in Southern California say hot, dry winds have died down and they're making great progress against a wildfire that's burned 27 square miles of farmland.

Ventura County fire spokesman Bill Nash says the 17,500-acre blaze near Moorpark is 75 percent contained Friday morning. Crews nearly doubled the level of containment since Thursday and are concentrating on the eastern and western flanks.

Full containment is expected Saturday.

Nash says only 25 homes remain threatened, and those are mainly scattered farmhouses.

A red flag warning of extreme fire danger remains in effect for triple-digit temperatures and low humidity, but winds that could have pushed the blaze through tinder-dry grass have eased.

About 2,700 firefighters are combating the blaze.
