Denver Water is advising customers within a roughly 1.5 square mile area in northwest Denver to boil their tap water before drinking it, after a contractor ruptured a 30-inch water main.
The water main break around 10:30 a.m. Thursday caused a loss of pressure, which can allow bacteria, viruses or parasites into the water system.
Denver Water says the boil advisory will last until tests show no more bacteria. Denver Water didn't have an exact number of customers affected. It advised residents and businesses between 10th and 24th avenues and between Federal Boulevard and Tennyson Street to boil tap water for three minutes and let it cool before drinking it. The utility expected to resolve the problem within 24 hours.
