So you want to get off the couch and get healthy in 2013? Making a plan is the first step, then it's up to a strong dose of dedication and hard work to help see you through.
"You can have the best training program in the world, but if you don't get out of bed in the morning, you're just not going to reach your goals," says Dr. Corwyn Sharp with the National Strength and Training Association in Colorado Springs.
Sharp says before you bite off more than you can chew, you need to set a realistic goal.
"If you're a 50 year old and you're trying to look like you are in high school that's probably not realistic."
If you're new to the fitness scene, Sharp also recommends sitting down with a certified personal trainer to lay out plan. A workout routine should cater to your body and what you hope to accomplish. A trainer will also show you how to exercise correctly. Using a machine the wrong way or putting too much stress on your muscles can lead to injuries.
Consistency is also key.
"Workout every single day, even if it's only for ten minutes, because when you work out everyday it becomes a habit, it becomes part of your daily lifestyle."
That life-style change needs to last if you expect to see results. Sharp says a majority of new gym members barely last half way through the year.
"If you can make it past 6 months, you're on your way, if you can make it past a month, you definitely made it to a milestone."
The National Strength and Conditioning Association is open to the public and offers training with certified personal trainers.
