Snowmass Village moose euthanized after hit by car

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - A young female moose in Snowmass Village has been euthanized after she was apparently hit by a car.

Snowmass Village Animal Services got a report of an injured moose struggling to get off the road Tuesday. Three of the moose's legs were broken.

The motorist didn't stop and could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident. There were no witnesses, but police found a black, passenger-side mirror from a Honda vehicle at the scene.

Authorities say the driver should have called police immediately so the animal didn't have to suffer as long. The moose was about 2 years old and weighed about 600 pounds.

The meat was donated to a local resident.
