Snowboard pioneer Tom Sims dies

Snowboard pioneer, Tom Sims, passed away Wednesday of cardiac arrest in a Santa Monica hospital near his home.

Sims is credited with creating the first snowboard in 1963 for his 7th grade wood shop class which he dubbed as the "skiboard." Continuing to redesign the sport, he created the first snowboard with metal edges and the first women's specific snowboard among many other advancements to boards and accessories.

Sims is survived by his wife Hilary, sister Margie Sims Klinger, sons Tommy and Shane, daughter Sarah, and step daughters Alexa and Kylie Wagner.
