Snooty Aspen tries to change reputation

Ritzy Aspen is trying to shake off a reputation for being snobby to tourists.

Town officials are starting a tourist outreach program called "Adopt a Tourist." Aspen officials want locals to volunteer to be paired with visiting tourists to share a slice of Aspen life, such as sharing tips for the best ski runs and restaurants.

Some say the effort is long overdue in an exclusive resort that can seem chilly to visitors. One local watering hole posts a sign that says, "If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?"

So far six Aspen residents have signed up on a city Facebook page to play host for visitors. No tourists have signed on yet, but city officials say they hope the ambassador program catches on.
