Firefighters in Colorado Springs are mopping up a small fire that burned the landscaping at the Lowe's on New Center Point near Powers and Constitution.

The dry windy weather has elevated the fire danger to high on Saturday. Two brush trucks and a standard pump engine were dispatched to keep the fire from spreading to an empty field that backs up to the property.

There is a large residential neighborhood on the eastern edge of the field opposite the store.

The wind gusts were strong enough to carry embers of the burning mulch roughly 200 yards away.

Fire crews quickly doused the flames and are now sifting through the charred landscaping with rakes and shovels checking for hot spots.

No official cause has been announced. However, the firefighters suspect that an improperly discarded cigarette is to blame. The fire started at about 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
