PEYTON, Colo. (AP) - A fire near Peyton has left three goats and several chickens dead.
Peyton Fire Protection District Chief Jack Rauer says a shed filled with animals and hay caught fire around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, killing the goats and several chicks. The Gazette reports another goat was taken to a veterinarian for burns.
Rauer says 14 firefighters from Falcon, Ellicott and Calhan helped fight the blaze.
The Peyton district has been asking firefighters from surrounding agencies to help on calls since a mass resignation earlier this week.
Ten firefighters turned in their badges Tuesday, after the district's board reinstated Rauer from two weeks of paid administrative leave following several accusations that he was unsafe and put other firefighters in danger. Rauer hasn't publicly commented on the specific allegations.
