Shannon Paolini along with friends and family stuff a box full of toys they've colleted over the past 2 weeks. They're donating the toys to Toys for Tots, in memory of Shannon's son Gavin. "It just keeps his name alive... His memory alive." she says, "For me it's a way to make sure people remember him."
Shannon and her son Gavin were both shot by her boyfriend In Fountain back in May. Shannon's son didn't survive. The community rallied around Shannon. A fact not lost on this young mother. "There was such an outpouring from the community. We received so many donations and so much support." she says, "I just thought I wanted to find a way to give back to everybody who has done stuff for me and my family."
Gavin would have been 3 years old Wednesday. Shannon says this has been the most trying time of her life. "Every day has been a challenge." she explains. Even so, Shannon's thoughts are always with her little boy. "He was vibrant and full of life." she says with a smile, "Very intelligent. I tell everybody he was a prodigy."
She tells us she's doing ok, with lots of help from the people around her. "I have an amazing family both here and in New York who just continue to push me (along with) my friends and my faith." she says. And as Christmas draws close, she reflects on her life and her precious son. "I would tell him that he was my sunshine." she says, A bright little soul who's always watching over his mommy.
