Sen. Michael Bennet is co-sponsoring a bill intended to counter the recent Supreme Court ruling that allows companies and unions to spend freely on ads for political candidates.

The Colorado Democrat says the bill would require company CEOs to say on camera that they approve the message, like candidates have to. Top corporate donors would also have to provide the message to prevent companies from using shell groups.

The proposal imposes restrictions on foreign corporations, government contractors and recipients of the U.S. bailout.

The court ruled 5-4 in January in a case involving campaign restrictions that corporations have the same free-speech rights as citizens.
