Some local elementary and middle school students are trying to encourage parents to turn off the engine while they wait to pick up their students. The science classes at Skyview Middle School and Meridian Ranch Elementary in Falcon District 49 area taking part in a pilot project called Engines Off Colorado which aims to cut back on air pollution around schools.
Skyview Principal Catherine Tinucci says she appreciates that her students can apply science concepts to a concrete experiment.
"We make em sit in a math classroom all day and graph data. Wouldn't it be cool if we could graph the data for a real life project, really understand how to interpret data, really understand how to make decisions and that real life people have jobs based on this," Tinucci said.
As part of the experiment, the students will collect emissions data on vehicles that sit idling outside the building. They will then share that data with the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.
