Schools team up for supercomputer center

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - Five Massachusetts universities are building a supercomputing center in Holyoke that will increase their research and may also boost the city.
Boston University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts have formed the venture to research protein structure, fluid flows, the dynamics of the earth's atmosphere and other issues.
The universities are each spending $10 million to build the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center. The state is committing $25 million and technology companies EMC Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. are contributing $2.5 million each.
The supercomputing center is being built and is expected to be operating by the end of 2012.
It's being built in Holyoke for the same reason industrialists arrived in the 19th century: cheap water power from the Connecticut River.
