SCAC names Roush 'Man of the Year'

Kaleb Roush added yet another honor to his extensive list of awards and recognitions when he was voted the 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Man of the Year by the league's senior woman administrators.

Roush joins former CC men's soccer standout Nick Lammers as winners of the SCAC's most prestigious annual award, which recognizes senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Lammers was the inaugural recipient in 2013.

Roush was one of five nominees considered by the selection committee. The others were Trinity University's Nicholas Moreno (tennis), Austin College's Nathan Packard (football), Southwestern University's Daniel Poole (soccer), and Texas Lutheran University's Bradley Snowden (football).

Roush, a third-team Academic All-American, graduated on May 19 with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a minor in mathematics. The owner of a 3.99 grade-point average, he was named the college's outstanding senior in biochem at Honors Convocation.

The native of Windsor, Colo., earned a spot on the SCAC's Academic Honor Roll each of his first three seasons and will be recognized again when the list of honorees from the 2014 spring semester are announced later this month. Earlier this year, he represented Colorado College in the league's Character and Community Program.

Roush was a fixture in the halls of the college's science buildings, throughout his academic career,

He served as a research and laboratory assistant in the Biology and Physics Departments, beginning as a learning assistant and FYE mentor in the fall of 2012. More recently, his duties have included directing and supervising student usage of the college's atomic force microscope, as well as analyzing the quality and utility of the data generated by students.

Roush's research included investigating the morphological and physiological roles of five different genes expressed during long-term stationary phase in Acinetobacter baylyi through atomic force microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and the generation of growth curves.

In 2012, Roush assisted in a summer research project with Murphy Brasuel, associate professor in CC's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The following year, he worked alongside Stephen Dewhurst, professor in the Microbiology and Immunology Department at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, researching HIV vaccine development using nano particles.

Roush also was an all-SCAC performer in the pool.

The senior co-captain posted three podium finishes and scored points in four events at the 2014 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. He finished 6th in 400-yard individual medley, 8th in 200 breaststroke and 12th in 200 IM.

At the 2013 conference meet, Roush set the school record in the preliminaries of the 400 IM and finished third in the championship final. He also took 5th in the 200 IM and 6th in the 200 butterfly.

His leadership skills extended far beyond the deck at Schlessman Natatorium.

Roush has participated in several community service endeavors. He was very active in Colorado College's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), serving as vice president during the 2013-14 academic year and participating in the 'Parent's Night Out' fundraisers.

He also served as an SCAC representative since 2011, communicating student-athlete perspectives regarding proposed NCAA legislation and representing CC athletes in the conference video shoots promoting sportsmanship.

Roush also played an active role in organizing the team's annual Hour of Power relay event that raises awareness and funding for sarcoma research.

After graduating in May, Roush plans to take a year or two before applying to graduate school where he hopes to enroll in microbiology and immunology programs. During that time, he aims to gain more laboratory experience by participating in a variety of fellowships and internships.
