DENVER (AP) - A Routt County woman accused of killing her 9-year-old son in a murder-suicide attempt has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
The Denver Post reports that Lisa Lesyshen broke down in tears and answered Judge Michael O'Hara through sobs as she entered her plea Monday in Denver.
She had earlier pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
She shot her son, Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan, before shooting herself in the neck in a suicide attempt at their home south of Steamboat Springs in May 2013. She was left paralyzed.
Her husband, Michael Kirlan, said he was satisfied with the sentence. The judge said he imagined the punishment Lesyshen faced every day "pales to the punishment" from the court.
