Rocky Mountain National Park nears 3 million visitors

Visitor numbers at Rocky Mountain National Park are up 2.5 percent over last year and could top 3 million for the first time since 2003.

Park officials say more than 2.93 million people have entered this year. December visits would have to total about 61,000 to reach 3 million for the year. Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says about 65,000 people visited the park last December, and almost 62,000 visited in December 2007.

Total visits last year were 2.75 million. The park is about 50 miles northwest of Denver and spans about 266,000 acres or 415 square miles. Trail Ridge Road, billed as the highest continuos paved road in the United States, reaches 12,183 feet.
