Two snowboarders riding near 11,990-foot Loveland Pass survived an avalanche that covered part of U.S. 6. Summit County sheriff's spokeswoman Tracy LeClair says one snowboarder escaped the slide that partially buried another Sunday afternoon.

The slide happened in a backcountry area between the pass and nearby Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, along U.S. 6. The highway temporarily was closed as crews removed snow from the avalanche that spilled onto the road.

LeClair says both snowboarders left the area before emergency crews arrived.
