SALIDA, COLO. - The Denver Post Ride The Rockies Bicycle Tour is revising the route for the sixth stage of the 2013 tour due to issues brought on by the Royal Gorge Wildfire.
The route for Friday, June 14 will begin in Salida, Colo. and end in Canon City, Colo. as planned. The route between the two points has been adjusted so that cyclists will now travel through the towns of Westcliffe, Wetmore and Florence before heading north into Canon City.
The route has been altered to avoid the potential closure of US 50 again and to minimize stress on state resources. Ride The Rockies management has been in close contact with Chaffee, Fremont and Custer County officials, Canon City representatives, Colorado Department of Transportation and Colorado State Patrol regarding the wildfire and alternate route options for the cyclists.
"The alternate route allows us to continue on to Canon City as planned with hopes of providing an uplifting experience for the community during this unfortunate time," said Ride The Rockies Tour Director Chandler Smith.
Recognizing that the air quality may be an issue, cyclists will have the option of being shuttled into Canon City rather than cycling the sixth stage.
"The health and safety of our cyclists is our top priority," Smith continued. "Based on all available information, we believe this new route offers cyclists a strong stage while minimizing potential health risks."
The 2013 Annual Ride The Rockies tour began in the town of Telluride, Colo. on June 9. To date, cyclists have traveled just over 400 miles visiting the cities/towns of Cortez, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Alamosa and Salida. The finish line celebration is scheduled as planned for Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs on Saturday, June 15.
Following is the revised route from Salida to Canon City via Westcliffe and Florence:

Proceeds from the tour benefit The Denver Post Community Foundation, which in turn funds Colorado nonprofit organizations that improve and enrich the quality of life in their communities.
