The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Rick has strengthened early Saturday off Mexico's Pacific coast into a major Category 3 storm with dangerous winds nearing 115 mph (185 kph).

The Miami center said at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT) Saturday that Rick was centered about 250 miles (400 kilometers) southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, and was moving west-northwest near 12 mph (19
kph). Acapulco's Civil Protection Department earlier issued a warning that rains are expected and could trigger landslides and flooding in the resort city.

Forecasters say they expect Rick to remain offshore during the weekend as the storm moves parallel to Mexico's coastline. They add that Rick could become a dangerous Category 4 storm later Saturday or by Sunday.
