St. Jude Children's Hospital has joined forces with Washington University to learn the genetic causes of pediatric cancer.

Researchers will study cancerous and normal tissues from 600 childhood cancer patients. They will look specifically at the genetic codes of these tissues, and try to identify differences.

Those differences may become markers for the disease, and help doctors determine which treatment works best.

The study will focus on childhood leukemias, brain tumors, and tumors of the bone and muscle.

The new project will cost an estimated $65 million and take three years to complete.
