Republican challengers enter recall elections

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two Republican challengers have entered the race to replace Democratic State Senators John Morse and Angela Giron.

Former Colorado Springs City Councilman Bernie Herpin is running because he believes voters deserve to be heard. He feels like gun rights supporters were ignored by Morse while voting on the controversial package of reforms.

"We need to unseat Senator Morse and send a clear message to the folks not only in Denver but throughout the national that we no longer will tolerate having our rights trampled on and being ignored," Herpin said.

Retired Pueblo Deputy Police Chief George Rivera is a newcomer to politics. He believes Giron is out of touch with her constituents in Pueblo on the issues of renewable energy and water rights as well as gun control.

"I won't go up with an agenda," Rivera said. "I'll go up with a philosophy to do the right thing for the most people in this district, in the third district."

Jaxine Bubis, a volunteer with the Morse recall campaign, had also filed papers to run as a Republican in the election. She dropped out recently after the party precinct captains in the district held a straw poll vote declaring Herpin as their candidate of choice.
