Republican challengers enter race against Morse

Colorado Springs - A pair of Republican challengers have entered the race to replace Democratic State Senator John Morse in recall special election. Former Colorado Springs City Councilman Bernie Herpin and Morse recall volunteer Jaxine Bubis have both filed campaign paperwork with the Colorado Secretary of State.

Morse, the Senate President, was targeted for his role in passing controversial gun control measures during the most recent legislative session.

Volunteers and members of the El Paso Freedom Defense Committee collected more than 16,000 signatures for the recall effort, of which 10,137 were validated by the Secretary of State. By law, 7187 valid signatures were needed to initiate a recall election.

Morse is challenging the wording of the petition in an effort to prevent a recall special election. He is the first state officer holder to face recall since state law was changed in 1912.

State Senator Angela Giron, D-Pueblo, is also facing a recall special election. Like Morse, Giron is challenging the wording of the petition used in her recall as well.
