The Colorado State Patrol says a Limon police officer is dead after attempting to serve a warrant.
Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Limon police officers and Lincoln County deputies were called out to a residence at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service. They were trying to contact a man on a fugitive warrant.
Deputies say as they officers tried to serve the warrant, the man shot and killed 27 year-old officer Jay Sheridan. The man then barricaded himself in another part of the trailer.
SWAT teams tried to negotiate with the man, who remained barricaded for several hours. When officers were finally able to reach him, he had a self inflicted gunshot wound. His condition is still unclear at this time.
The incident is under investigation.
Up to 20 nearby residents were evacuated during the standoff.
The officer who died, Jay Sheridan, was from Limon. He served as a member of the Limon Police Department for six and a half years.
