A report on construction of the Southern Delivery System says the pipeline will contribute to the creation of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in earnings for the population. Those are among the findings of a new independent economic development report commissioned by the Center for Regional Advancement, an arm of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, and performed by Summit Economics LLC.
The Southern Delivery System, known as SDS, is a 62-mile pipeline from Pueblo Reservoir to Colorado Springs and related facilities, including pump stations and a water treatment plant. The project has been in the planning stages for nearly 20 years and has received approval at local, state and federal levels.
While water rates will increase, the report predicts SDS will result in more than 750 jobs for construction. By 2020 the report says more than 13,000 new jobs will be added in the region. It predicts growth would be 36 percent lower without SDS.
