An Arapahoe County Sheriff's report suggests Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was depressed over knee surgery performed about a month before he committed suicide.

An investigator noted in the report that shortly after the surgery, the 23-year-old said he should "just kill himself," but "No one believed he was serious."

The report released Tuesday says McKinley had made statements about not knowing what he would do without football.

Two female friends who were taking care of his son in Denver discovered McKinley's body Monday. According to the report, officers who responded to his death noted a strong odor of marijuana. Authorities say he died of a gunshot wound to the head. Members of the Denver Broncos say they didn't see any hint McKinley was suicidal.

The players plan to leave his locker in place for the remainder of the season as a shrine.
