Report: Helicopter that crashed on Pikes Peak hit downdraft

The NTSB says a helicopter which crashed on Pikes Peak while shooting video in September hit a downdraft.

The report said the pilot was near the top of the mountain, around 14,000 feet.  The pilot reported he had flown around Pikes Peak many times over the last 24 years and was familiar with the conditions.  The pilot flew away from the mountain and was making a gentle 180 degree turn.  He reported the wind conditions were normal, but when he turned back toward the mountain he hit a downdraft.  At that high altitude the helicopter didn't have enough power to compensate.

The pilot landed on the road to the summit.  The chopper touched down hard and rolled over on its left side.  According to the report the pilot received minor injuries, while the three passenger were not injured.

The helicopter is owned by JBD Enterprises of Englewood.
