Rep. John Salazar is asking the House of Representatives to establish a database listing awards earned by U.S. servicemen and women. Salazar said Monday the database would help expose people who falsely claim to have received medals. He asked colleagues to co-sponsor his bill establishing a database.
Salazar sponsored a 2005 law that makes it a crime punishable by up to a year in jail to falsely claim military medals. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco and a U.S. district judge in Denver have ruled the law is an unconstitutional restriction on free speech.
Federal prosecutors haven't said whether they will appeal. Salazar says he believes the Supreme Court will uphold the law.
