Congressman John Salazar has introduced a bill to designate about 61,000 acres in three southwest Colorado counties as federal wilderness. The Colorado Democrat says the measure would protect lands and mountains that define the state's character and spirit.

The proposal includes land in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, Gunnison and San Juan national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas. The Lizard Head Wilderness and Mount Sneffels wilderness areas would be expanded.

The conservation group Trout Unlimited says some of Colorado's most renowned mountains and top-quality wildlife habitat would be permanently protected.
