A moment of silence was observed at Fort Carson today when family, friends and fellow servicemen came to honor and remember the life of Staff Sergeant Lex Lewis who was killed in a fire fight at the start of his third tour in Afghanistan.

He was in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and earned many awards and decorations throughout his service including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Sergeant Lewis served in the navy for several years before entering the army in 1999. Between the two armed forces he served for eighteen years and was a supportive friend to many.

"He was a good guy, I mean, like I said earlier, somebody you'd want to meet, a friend you'd want to have, somebody that you'd want to have your back," says friend Staff Sergeant Russell Braswell, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

He is survived by his wife, step-daughter and mother.
