As families head to the pool this holiday weekend, the federal government is issuing a friendly reminder to parents.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports drownings traditionally increase during the Independence Day holiday.
USA Swimming analyzed media reports over the last three years and found an average of 26 children drowned in pools and spas during the holiday week.
Last year 30 drowned.
Experts urge parents to never leave children alone in a pool, designate a water watcher to supervise, and keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid getting stuck.
