One Rocky Mountain State Games record has already been smashed, and early competition in two sports- Swimming and Modern Pentathlon, begins Friday.
A total of 411 Colorado swimmers have registered for the pool events, which are set for Cheyenne Mountain High School Friday (10 a.m.), Saturday (9:30 a.m.) and Sunday (8:30 a.m.).
That breaks the old Rocky Mountain State Games record of 267 swimmers set in 2006, the last time the Games were staged in Colorado Springs.
Also getting an early start this year is Modern Pentathlon, with 44 athletes set to compete in one of the Olympic Games' oldest sports.
USA Pentathlon, in partnership with the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation and the City of Colorado Springs, will conduct its 98th National Championships within the Rocky Mountain State Games, giving it added attention two years before the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Registration for athletes of all ages and skill levels is open in 33 sports at www.coloradospringssports.org
