Recreational marijuana pays off for Pueblo County

PUEBLO COUNTY - Nearly one million dollars' worth of marijuana was sold between the two recreational pot shops in Pueblo County. That's just in the month of January.

The state will get around $93,000 in sales tax revenue.

As for Pueblo County, if you combine the local sales tax with the state tax, Pueblo County will get $55,000 for one month of sales tax revenue.

Pueblo County Commissioner Sal Pace says the numbers exceeded expectations. "In the ballot measure we put on the ballot this last November for recreational adult marijuana taxes, we projected a cumulative $400,000 from our 3.5% sales tax. It looks like we're going to break that if this pace continues," said Pace.

The County expects to get more than $600,000 in new tax revenue by the end of the year.

The county allows a total of ten retail shops to open by the end of the year. Right now, two are open. Three more are expected to be up and running next month.
