PORT WASHINGTON, NY - A record number of shoppers either returned holiday gifts or used gift cards at malls and retail shops last week. A study released Friday by the NPD Group suggests 61 percent of American consumers visited brick-and-mortar stores from December 23 - 29.
Their data also show fewer customers (62.5 percent) actually purchased an item while they were at the store as compared to the previous week (64.6 percent.)
"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Group. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"
The NPD Group's Shopping Activity Weekly Holiday Trends surveys 4,750 consumers online each day to track to try and capture shopping behavior patterns.
