NEW INFORMATION: Rattlesnake victim's condition upgraded

Rattlesnake bite victim Roy Smith has been upgraded from crticial, but stable, to serious condition at Penrose Hospital.

------PREVIOUS---------------

Rattlesnake bite victim Roy Smith is now in critical, but stable condition at Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs.

As he recovers, Wildlife Officers and Emergency Responders are urging people to remember this is rattlesnake country and we need to be careful.

They say on cool days rattlesnakes will be out in the sun to warm up.  On hot days, like we've been having, they'll try to find some shade, which includes any shade on your property.

We'll have more for you on News First 5 at 10.

An El Paso County man bitten by a rattlesnake Tuesday night is in critical condition at a Colorado Springs Hospital.

The unnamed man was at his Hanover home when he reached off his deck to help his dogs onto the deck and was bitten on the left hand, according to Carl Tatum, Hanover Fire Protection District Chief. Tatum says the victim didn't see or hear the snake, but noticed the bite marks, and his hand started to swell immediately. When rescuers arrived they realized that the victim was in serious trouble and called for a medical helicopter. He was airlifted to Penrose Main Hospital.

Penrose spokesman Chris Valentine says the victim is still in critical condition.

NewsFirst5 reporter James Jarman will have interviews on this story on News First 5 at 6 pm.
