The first of a series of back-to-back winter storms has arrived in Southern California, bringing rain that could total several inches by Monday night. Showers are expected to increase in intensity with heavy rains possible by Monday afternoon.

Residents in communities below wildfire-scarred mountains are on high alert for debris flows and flash floods. In preparation for possible mudslides, crews have handed out 30,000 sandbags and built 10,000 feet of concrete barriers in foothill communities near burn areas.

The National Weather Service says rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches can be expected through Monday night. Snow could fall in the Sierra foothills as low as 3,000 feet, boosting a depleted snowpack but making travel hazardous.
