Rafter drowns in accident on Arkansas River

The drowning death of a Canon City woman is being investigated in Fremont County.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon in the Arkansas River just west of Parkdale.

Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman says that 22-year old Nikki Innes was training to be a raft guide with Whitewater Adventure Outfitters, a rafting company in the Canon City area.

While swimming with her group in an area called "Puppy Dog Tails", Innes got tangled in debris and was held under water. An instructor tried pulling Innes out but was unable to release here.

The area is known as "safe swimming hole" along the river and is often used as a swimming area by rafters. Innes was wearing a life jacket.

Tony Keenan, owner of the rafting company, said "We've lost a staff member and a friend."

Innes had worked at the company several years in the headquarters office and now wanted to be a guide.
