Rabid skunk found on Pueblo porch

Another rabid skunk has been found in Pueblo, this time on the porch of a home in Pueblo County near 28th Lane and Gale Road.

This is the sixth skunk to test positive for rabies in Pueblo County this year.  The skunk was not known to have contact with humans or pets.

"Pueblo is getting closer and closer to the possibility of a human being exposed to rabies," stated Dr. Christine Nevin-Woods public health director at the Pueblo City-County Health Department. She explained, "There is potential for a rabid skunk to infect an unvaccinated dog or cat, that may go on to infect a human through a bite."

Dr Nevin-Woods emphasized, "It is important for people to stay away from wild mammals, especially animals displaying unnatural behavior during daylight hours. This latest rabid skunk is a reminder to make sure your pets and livestock are up to date on their vaccinations."

Cick here for the locations of all the rabid skunks that have been found this year in Pueblo.

"We wanted to reach out to the family again," said Jodi Fletcher, assistant principal. Fletcher explained that more than 250 people participated in the January drive, and she hopes to have similar numbers April 19.
