BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) - A pit bull puppy that was thrown out of a moving car on Long Island is out of a veterinary hospital.

Newsday reports that the puppy, named Joey, was discharged Friday from the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip. He was there for three weeks after his neck was broken when he was tossed out of a car in Brentwood.

At first, veterinarians weren't sure the 3-month-old puppy would be able to walk again. But now he can.

Dr. Lynda Loudon-Sheppard says Joey tires easily, but he's much stronger than doctors expected he'd be now.

Joey is being fostered now. He'll be available for adoption in about a month.

Some $39,000 has been donated for Joey's care and $27,000 for information leading to his abuser's conviction.
