Pueblo's Monsignor Delaney turns 100

Friends are wishing a special happy birthday to Pueblo's Monsignor Howard Delaney; he turns 100 Sunday!

He entered a new century of life with a trip to morning mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pueblo.

Msgr. Delaney was born December 11th, 1911 in Nebraska. He later moved to Golden to pursue engineering at Colorado School of Mines, but eventually switched to the ministry. Msgr. Delaney was ordained in 1940 and moved to Walsenburg; where he was assigned to Saint Mary Parish. He was there for 27 years before being reassigned to Christ the King in Pueblo; where he's been ever since.

Msgr. Delaney is a scientist at heart; not the standard for men of faith, however Msgr. Delaney says the two go hand in hand. He still reads about the latest scientific findings and technological advances, and he loves hearing about the latest gadgets. Thinking about all of the inventions he's seen, one that stands out to Msgr. Delaney is the radio. He tells News 5 about the first time he got to hear one, back in the 1920s. He said you had to listen through headphones; Msgr. Delaney says broadcasting has come a long way since then.

Msgr. Delaney also had his pilot's license. He had a couple of planes and would fly Pueblo's Bishop at the time around the diocese, making for quicker trips.

Passing the century mark is still hard for him to believe. He says he doesn't have any secret to living a long life; he just says that he's been blessed.

"I'm thankful for the number of years I've been granted, also the relatively good health," says Msgr. Delaney. "(I) Have to tell myself every once and a while that I'm actually 100."

"Deo Gratias - thanks be to God."

Msgr. Delaney retired years ago, but still helps at Christ the King. His friends and church family are helping him celebrate this milestone.
