It's not everyday you meet a 2 year old that inspires you to live life to the fullest-- and do it with a smile. But that's exactly what Lily Karcher does; born with Down Syndrome and recently diagnosed with Leukemia, nothing is stopping this little girl.
When Lily Karcher was born, it was love at first sight.
"She's the most loving girl i've ever met in my life," says father, Bill. "Since the day she was born, she's always been very happy and very silly."
In September of last year, Lily was diagnosed with Leukemia after her parents noticed she had pain in her shoulder and arm.
As it turns out, children with down syndrome are more likely to develop the disease, but they also respond better to treatment. A study published by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute says it's mainly because of a genetic mutation.
"Its unfair that she already has to deal with extra challenges in her life and now this, it's just, why did this happen to such a sweet innocent person." says Lindsey, Lily's mother.
"She has been amazing. she's endured so many pokes, and exams and chemo that makes her sick, steroids that make her emotional and crabby," adds Bill.
But for the most part-- this is how you're sure to find 2 year old Lily Karcher happy and completely in love with life.
"Lily's the toughest girl i know she's my hero i'd have to say."
Lily is currently going through chemotherapy and will be on treatments for another year and a half.
