PUEBLO - The Pueblo Police Department is reminding gun owners in the community about their free gun lock program. The devices are provided at no cost as part of the Project Child Safe program and can be picked up at the Police Department at 200 S. Main St.
A news release encourages gun owners to safely handle their firearms around children. Some suggestions include explaining the difference between pretend and real life.
"Do not assume that your child knows the difference between being "killed" on TV or in a video game and the reality of gun violence," the release reads.
It goes on to encourage gun owners and parents to use safes and gun locks for all firearms in the home.
"In a home where guns are kept, the degree of safety a child has rests squarely on the parents and gun owner."
Finally, parents are encouraged to talk with their children about gun safety. If they see a gun they should STOP! Don't Touch! Leave the Area! and Tell an Adult!
