The Pueblo Police Department has taken exception to a publication by CQ press, which analyzes crime data from the FBI. According to the report, Pueblo had the highest crime rate of any major city in Colorado in 2009.l
Pueblo Police Chief Jim Billings said the data is simply inaccurate.
For example, Pueblo had 7 homicides in 2009, but the report shows 14. Somehow attempted murder was included along with actual murders. (The official report from the Police Department shows 6 murders, but it was later discovered that a murder thought to have occured in the county, actually happened inside the city.)
According to Billings, this problem was tracked to an automated reporting process, which gave false results. Billings said attempts to correct the crime reports were unsuccessful because the FBI had already published it.
The Police Department is also examining the data related to aggravated assaults, and may modify reports in the future to exclude crimes that are not truly assaults. Right now the system includes menacing and attempted assaults in the assault category.
Pueblo has had only one murder in 2010.
