Law Week Colorado reports that Pueblo District Judge Jill Mattoon is the only Colorado judge to receive a "do not retain" recommendation from a judicial-performance commission in 2010, the Colorado Office of Judicial Performance Evaluations announced Tuesday.
"Despite her years of varied experience, the commission finds Judge Mattoon's lack of basic legal knowledge disconcerting and problematic," the 10th Judicial District Performance Commission said. Law Week also reports that Mattoon's state survey results show that her survey scores have been declining.
Mattoon responded to Law Week, contending that five members of her performance commission have ties to the local public defender's office or the criminal defense bar - and no law enforcement representatives. "I respect and welcome constructive criticism, striving to improve every day," she said.
Since 1990, just 15 Colorado judges have received the recommendation.
