Pueblo City Council OKs moratorium on pot sales

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - The Pueblo City Council has approved a moratorium on processing permits for marijuana shops until March 2014.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports the City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the moratorium. It also approved an ordinance blocking private pot-smoking clubs.

The moratorium on pot sales will allow the City Council to see how other Colorado cities handle marijuana regulations, now that voter-approved Amendment 64 is allowing for legal possession and recreational use of small amounts of marijuana under state law. The drug is still illegal under federal law.

Nevertheless, the City Council voted to amend municipal code to reflect the new state law, making it legal for people 21 and older to use and possess marijuana and paraphernalia.
