GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors say they won't pursue criminal charges against a 75-year-old Grand Junction man who shot and killed his adult son.
Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger says Gary Meier acted "reasonably and legally" when he shot his son Garth Meier in February.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/XJM6E6 ) the elder Meier told detectives his 48-year-old son burst into his bedroom as he was trying to sleep and hit him twice in the head with a metal coat hanger that had been mounted to a door. Gary Meier shot his son once in the chest with a handgun.
Officers who arrived on scene observed that Gary Meier had a gash on his forehead and other lacerations.
Gary Meier told investigators his son had a drug problem and was often violent.
