Prisoner charged in worker's death

(AP) - An inmate named as a person of interest in the death of a state prison worker in Crowley has been advised he is now being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

The Denver Post reports a Crowley County District Court judge advised Miguel Contreras-Perez on Tuesday that he is being held in the death of 55-year-old Sgt. Mary Ricard. She was killed last September while breakfast was being prepared for inmates at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility. Sgt. Lori Gann also was stabbed but survived.

District Attorney Rodney Fouracre said Wednesday that Contreras-Perez will be formally charged Jan. 29 with Ricard's death and with wounding Gann.

Prosecutors haven't released why Contreras-Perez is suspected in Ricard's death. The former Fort Carson soldier had been imprisoned for kidnapping and sexual assault.
