President Barack Obama is endorsing incumbent Michael Bennet in Colorado's Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate.
In a statement released by the White House late Thursday Obama praised Bennet, whom he strongly considered asking to his secretary of education.
The president's statement said in part: "Michael has had my full support from day one and I look forward to working with him in the Senate for years to come."
Obama issued the statement a day after a credible challenger entered the primary against Bennet.
Andrew Romanoff, a former state legislator, announced his candidacy on Wednesday.
